Click-to-WhatsApp Ads: How They Work, the 72-Hour Window and Lead Qualification

Click-to-WhatsApp ads replace the landing page with a conversation. Instead of sending a paid click to a form most people abandon, the ad opens WhatsApp, the customer writes first, and your team or automation picks it up. Done well, it is one of the cheapest lead channels Meta offers — because the messaging that follows is free for three days.

How the ads work

You build the ad in Meta Ads Manager on Facebook or Instagram and choose WhatsApp as the destination. The button opens a chat with your WhatsApp Business number, usually with a pre-filled message. When the customer sends it, your platform receives the message plus a referral object identifying the ad, campaign and creative that produced it.

The 72-hour free entry point window

If you reply within 24 hours of that first message, Meta opens a 72-hour free entry point window. For those 72 hours every message you send to that customer — free-form replies and templates of any category — carries no Meta messaging fee. Since Meta moved to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025, this is the single biggest cost lever for acquisition: a full qualification, quote and booking sequence can run inside it at zero messaging cost.

The window only opens if you respond inside 24 hours. A slow first reply turns a free three-day window into ordinary paid template messaging.

Qualifying the lead in the first five minutes

  1. Reply instantly. An automated first response acknowledges the message and asks one question.
  2. Ask two or three qualifying questions with reply buttons or a WhatsApp Flow rather than free text.
  3. Route by answer. Hot leads go straight to a person in the inbox; others enter a nurture sequence inside the 72 hours.
  4. Ask for marketing opt-in explicitly and store it with a timestamp.
  5. Hand over context. The agent should see the ad, the answers and the contact record before typing.

Attribution back to Meta

Save the referral payload on the contact in your CDP. When the lead qualifies, books or buys, send that event back through Meta's Conversions API. Without this loop, Meta optimises for people who open chats; with it, Meta optimises for people who become customers.

Common mistakes

  • No one staffing the inbox when the ads run, so the 24-hour reply deadline is missed.
  • A long free-text interrogation instead of buttons.
  • Treating the chat as marketing consent.
  • Measuring cost per conversation instead of cost per qualified lead.

How Arino One fits

Arino One captures the ad referral on the contact, answers instantly with automations or embedded AI, routes qualified leads to the unified inbox, and keeps consent records on your own dedicated instance.

FAQ

What is a Click-to-WhatsApp ad?

A Facebook or Instagram ad whose button opens a WhatsApp chat with your business instead of a website. The customer sends the first message, so the conversation starts customer-initiated.

Is messaging after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad free?

Yes. When a customer messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, Meta opens a 72-hour free entry point window. During those 72 hours all messages you send, including templates, are free of Meta messaging charges. You still pay for the ad itself.

How do I measure results from Click-to-WhatsApp ads?

Each ad click carries a referral payload identifying the ad. Store it against the contact, then send conversion events (lead qualified, booking, purchase) back to Meta through the Conversions API so the ad system optimises for real outcomes rather than opened chats.

Do Click-to-WhatsApp ads count as opt-in?

Starting a chat lets you reply, but it is not consent to ongoing marketing. Ask for explicit marketing opt-in inside the conversation and record it, especially under GDPR.
