Can You Change WhatsApp BSP and Keep Your Green Tick and Templates?
This is the question that stalls most provider switches, and the short answer is reassuring: the green tick belongs to your WhatsApp Business Account and the verified business behind it, not to your Business Solution Provider. When the account and number migrate, Official Business Account status migrates with them. Templates are the part you should plan to redo.
What carries over, and what doesn't
- Green tick (Official Business Account): granted by Meta against your WhatsApp Business Account and verified business, so it normally survives a provider change. It is at risk only if the underlying identity changes — a new display name, a different business entity, or a fresh account created from scratch rather than a migration.
- Phone number: stays yours. A BSP change re-registers the same number through a different provider.
- Display name: carries across with the account. Treat any request to change it as a separate exercise to do after the migration has settled, not during.
- Quality rating and messaging limits: attached to the number and its account, so they generally travel rather than resetting.
- Message templates: plan to re-submit. Assume nothing transfers and pre-approve everything you use.
- Conversation history: held by the outgoing platform. Export it before you close that account — it is not part of the number migration.
- Contacts, consent and opt-outs: your records, but they need an explicit export and import with source and timestamp intact.
Meta revises its verification and migration processes periodically. Everything above reflects how the process generally works, but confirm the current Meta process with your destination provider before scheduling — particularly if your account was verified some time ago or sits under an unusual Business Manager structure.
Why the badge is not the provider's to give
Official Business Account status is the outcome of business verification and Meta's own assessment of the brand's authenticity and notability. A BSP submits the request and supports the process, but the decision and the record sit with Meta against your account. That is why a provider cannot meaningfully promise you a green tick, and equally why leaving that provider does not revoke one you already hold.
A safe cut-over
1. Confirm the current process in writing
Ask the destination provider to confirm, for your specific account, that the WhatsApp Business Account and display name migrate intact and that Official Business Account status is expected to persist. Get it before you give notice anywhere.
2. Change nothing about your identity
Keep the display name, business entity and verified profile exactly as they are through the migration. Cosmetic changes are the most common way a straightforward switch turns into a re-review.
3. Pre-approve templates on the destination
Re-submit every template in active use and wait for approval. This is the step with variable timing, so it happens days ahead of the window, not on the day.
4. Export history, contacts and consent
Take conversation history, contact records and the opt-out list off the outgoing platform while the account is still open, and import them with their provenance preserved.
5. Migrate outside peak hours and verify immediately
Meta's verification step makes the sender briefly unavailable — usually minutes. Pause campaigns, move the number, then send outbound and reply inbound from a real handset before re-enabling anything.
6. Check the badge and rating after the dust settles
Confirm the green tick still renders on the profile and that quality rating and messaging limits look as expected, then rebuild automations and routing.
The full mechanics, including the pieces that are not badge-specific, are in migrating your WhatsApp number to a new BSP. For the sender registration itself, see the docs page on registering a WhatsApp sender.
The honest summary
Fear of losing the green tick keeps a lot of businesses on a provider they have outgrown. The badge is not the leash it appears to be: it is attached to your verified business and your WhatsApp Business Account, both of which move with you. Budget your caution for template re-approval and the history export — those are the parts that genuinely need planning.
